Step by Step Guide

Sleep Out America is a Do-It-Yourself style event – you choose where to Sleep Out and who to invite to join you.
All you need to participate is a safe place to sleep outside and a commitment to helping raise awareness and funds to end youth homelessness. Here’s how it works:



Step 1: Register for Sleep Out America (its free to get started!)

The only thing you need to know before you sign up is how you’d like to participate. Our most common ways include:


You, Yourself

Sign up to Sleep Out so homeless youth don’t have to. Sleep Out solo or with a friend or two or more (you can always form an official group later!).


With Your Family, Friends, or Neighbors

Teach your children about kids their age who may find themselves in a difficult situation, but who might not be that different from them.


With Your Community Group
(your place of worship, school, or other local group)

There’s strength in numbers. Bring your community together to help homeless kids… and to protect and safeguard all children in need.


With your company or a group of co-workers

Unite as a company or a group of co-workers to show your philanthropic values and make a lasting impact for children in crisis.

Step 2: Spread the Word!

Invite family and friends from near and far to join the Sleep Out Movement with you. Whether or not you create a group and Sleep Out together, you can raise awareness about youth homelessness and the work we’re doing to stop it.

Getting the word out is easy – you can do it via text, email, social media, and in-person. We provide Tool Kits and Sample Messages to get you started.




Step 3: Fundraise!

Sleep Out America is primarily a fundraising event to support the life-saving services Covenant House provides kids facing homelessness.

We ask that each Sleep Out America participant set a fundraising goal of at least $50 – but don’t worry! We provide you with all the tools you need to reach your goal and have an impact, including:

  • A personal fundraising webpage, created when you register for Sleep Out America
  • A Participant Dashboard to easily draft messages, track gifts, and thank donors
  • A step-by-step guide on how to fundraise and why it’s important
  • Sample messages that you can copy and paste into emails, texts, social media posts, and more!

Step 4: Prepare for Your Sleep Out

On Friday, November 22, 2019, you will join a nation-wide movement from your home, school, company, local park, or wherever you choose to Sleep Out. We want you to see first-hand how and how your Sleep Out is helping, so that night, we’ll share exclusive content, including special videos, interactive discussions, and other activities that allow you to have an online experience with other participants from coast-to-coast.

Because Sleep Out America is a Do-It-Yourself style program, each Sleep Out will be unique. To help you prepare, we’ll also provide activity ideas, materials, statistics and stories that you can use to make your experience meaningful.
